Wekfest San Jose 2019 Pt. 2

With Wekfest San Jose now in the rearview mirror, we respectfully submit what’s left of our photo haul from the event after Part 1 and our Honda coverage galleries. Several of these pics capture show cars streaming slowly out the convention center after hours at the end of the night.

A few vehicles from different eras and seemingly vastly different aesthetics represented the Bay Area’s own Team High Octane Tuners (HOT) at Wekfest SJ. On one end of the spectrum, William Estrada’s 1971 Datsun 510—on some pretty fresh Work Meister CRs—and 1969 Toyota Corolla Sprinter, which took home hardware for first place in the Nostalgic Car category; on the other end of the spectrum is the buff @w1cked_63s AMG C 63 S. All of these vehicles at some point over the years have been recognized by Wekfest, which speaks to the caliber of the HOT crew.

After decades, the Honda-swapped original Mini is still a thing, and we couldn’t be more tickled! We first caught wind of these things 20 years ago (our age is showing) and since then the marketplace now has at least one outfit (we suspect there are others) that will help facilitate the switcharoo and build. The beauty of the swap is obviously dropping in more modern, more potent power into a lightweight (albeit go-kartish in size, but also in handling!) chassis, and you can get away with installing one of Honda’s more run-of-the-mill single-cam engines and still have a blast while saving a little bit of scratch. This mating, however, finds Honda’s more powerful twin-cam B-series under the Mini’s engine cover, which probably makes the old-school British icon a rocket ship.

With every passing event the cult of 86/BRZ grows, but projects like Brian Yeung’s Scion FR-S continue to set the bar very high. The trendsetting Super Street feature car was posted up near the Mackin Industries booth and is still as stunning as ever, thanks in large part to the Varis Kamikaze kit. The suite of body aero is a bold, refreshing reminder that these days there’s more than one company doing widebody right for this platform.
