Modest Car Show 2019

The Twin Cities-based Drive Cartel group is responsible for some of the best car meets and events to ever hit the Minneapolis and St. Paul region, and most assumed it was only a matter of time before they took a shot at holding a large-scale show. Now in its second year, Modest is one of the most highly anticipated events on the Minnesota calendar. With a short car season and a pension for hot rod- and classic car-based shows in MN, quality events aimed at the import and tuner culture are few and far between. The recipe for Modest is simple; a strict screening process, limited number of entries, and providing a cool atmosphere. They nail that with only allowing 100 of the best cars and trucks to enter, then top it off with the perfect venue right in the heart of St. Paul.

The 100-vehicle limit is a nice touch that keeps the event exclusive enough to encourage locals to push their builds further in order to get accepted – which is a good thing. Despite the vehicle limit, the level of diversity at the show remains high. There was a good mix of build styles that included JDM to Euro, VIP, and everything in between. There were even some vans and mini-trucks to mix things up. The thing with the MN tuner culture is there’s no real defined style. Instead, they take what they like from all of the different genres and combine it all together. Some get it right, others don’t, but it makes for an eclectic mix of vehicles to look at.

The venue itself is a bonus. Nestled in downtown St. Paul, next to the Mississippi River at the Union Depot train station, it definitely carries a historic vibe which only adds to the laid-back atmosphere of the show. The outdoor event with a cityscape backdrop on one side and a river view on the other make for some amazing shots and, thankfully, this year the weather was sunny (extremely hot and humid, but sunny nonetheless!)

The Drive Cartel group definitely have a proven recipe for a solid showing. With some tweaking, it might just become the must-attend stop for Midwest show goers. We look forward to checking it out again next year to see what they have in store.
